Fish

Amidst Fish

The fish heads spring upwards from small bodies of water gaping and singing as synchronized swimmers. Initially seeing their light playfulness on paper, I explored their solidity and surface in ceramics and worked towards a body of art that explores the playful dynamics of the fish through drawings and sculpture. I continue to experiment with different glazes and surface treatments in this body of work.
In their ceramic forms, space becomes a particularly important element for the fish head. The fish are best paired in groups of three or more, growing in width and height to create a climbing sensation as the eyes jump from fish to fish. When nestled together, they create a comfortable coziness between their ceramic bodies. On the exterior body, a variety of patterns are carved into the fish heads, often creating a strong contrast to these cut edges and the glaze. Patterned skins represent different natural elemental patterns: steam rises from a hot spring, sunlight dances across waves, fish scale waterfalls, and ancient reptilian skins crackle. The ragged, inner throat of the fish brings forth raw, unabashed truth and expression: the fish are in a constant state of their sirenical song.
